Public Relations Manager

Job Summary

The Public Relations Manager will assist the Communications Director with Texas Appleseed's external communications. The employee's primary role will be to work on Texas Appleseed’s projects, as well as events and other needs.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Draft press releases, media advisories, fact sheets, talking points/messaging, and other PR-related materials
  • Interact with journalists, bloggers, freelancers, and other professionals 
  • Build new relationships with journalists
  • Identify news story opportunities
  • Pitch story ideas to reporters, producers, and other news professionals
  • Spearhead press briefings and news conferences
  • Lead staff interview preparation 
  • Develop local, state, and national media lists
  • Stay abreast of best PR practices and tools
  • Assist with PR measurement 
  • Assist with PR/communications long-term planning
  • Assist updating areas of our website

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism or a related degree
  • A minimum of four years of professional public relations or journalism experience working at a PR agency, in a newsroom, a nonprofit or business (outside of internships/school)
  • An understanding of how newsrooms work  
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Excellent editing skills, including regular use of the Associated Press (AP) Stylebook
  • Highly organized, with the ability to manage various projects and tasks under different time constraints
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong oral communication skills 
  • Must be adept at communicating and interacting with diverse groups of people, including community partners, board members, journalists, and people of varied economic, racial, ethnic, and gender backgrounds 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Incorporates and considers all PR/communications aspects, from social media to video, to ensure those elements are incorporated into overall PR plans
  • A commitment to social, economic, and racial justice
  • A passion for public relations

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism or a related degree
  • Minimum of four years of professional experience in public relations or journalism

Background Information

The Public Relations Manager will report directly to the Communications Director. This position is based in Austin, Texas. This is a full-time position at 40 hours a week. Some in-state travel may be required.

Texas Appleseed offers competitive pay; paid health, life, dental and vision insurance for full-time employees; a generous paid leave package; as well as retirement matching and flexible hours in an inclusive culture. The approximate salary range is $60,000 to $65,000 per year, commensurate with experience.

The employee will have the opportunity to work fully in person or follow a flex schedule (part in person and part telecommute, as determined with your supervisor). Schedules may be fully remote due to COVID-19. Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Ability to attend press-related events, such as at city halls, at the Texas capitol building, and school board meetings.
