Texas Appleseed joins the legal community in mourning the loss of the legendary Steve Susman, who died on July 14, 2020. Throughout his career, Susman fought diligently to ensure justice for all Texans, setting a model for the legal profession.
Susman was an early member of the Texas Appleseed Board of Directors. He laid the foundation for Susman Godfrey’s commitment to our work—including continued representation on our board by lawyers from the firm. His long-time support enabled us to achieve lasting positive change, improving the lives of tens of thousands of vulnerable Texans.
In 2013, Texas Appleseed honored Susman and his law partner Lee Godfrey with the J. Chrys Dougherty Good Apple Award. The award is our highest recognition to luminaries who have helped shape Texas for the better and whose work has inspired us all. Susman and Godfrey could not have been a better fit for this award. Together they built a law firm with a reputation for excellence and fostered a firm culture of “giving back.” The firm’s involvement in large pro bono cases has significantly impacted our state and our country.
Susman’s passion for law and justice will be greatly missed. Texas Appleseed extends our deepest sorrows to his family.
