First Paragraph of Introduction — This call for public comments on the state of school discipline in the United States comes at the perfect time. In such a volatile political climate, where the coronavirus pandemic still rages and objective tenets of U.S. history are up for debate, the prospect of harsh discipline looms large in the lives of millions of American schoolchildren as they prepare to return to school. Our organizations fight across the United States for equal educational opportunities and to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline; in 2021, as the Biden Administration considers the possibility of vigorous civil rights enforcement in our nation’s schools, we acknowledge how pivotal this moment is.
A letter from Texas Organizing Project, Texas Appleseed, and the Texas Criminal Justice Coalition to the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees in support of its proposed suspension ban. We applaud the DISD Board of Trustees for opening the discussion of a K-12 suspension ban, and our letter also offered our recommendations for policies and practices.
